Smarty Ears makes speech, language and literacy tools for families, educators and speech-language pathologists. Every one of them is designed by people who work with children every day.

Children grow up surrounded by technology, yet so much speech and language practice still happens with worksheets and paper cards. Smarty Ears started with one speech-language pathologist’s idea: practice should be as engaging as the devices kids already love.
That idea became the first speech therapy app on the App Store. Since then, we have grown into a family of tools used at home, in classrooms and in therapy rooms around the world.

Communication grows when the people around a child work together. We build for all of them.

For districts →Our founder, Barbara Fernandes, had an idea for an app to support speech sound practice. Smarty Ears was founded, and the first speech therapy app on the App Store was released.

We partnered with more than 26 educators and speech therapists to create a diverse collection of therapy tools for articulation, language, AAC, social skills and more.

Smarty Ears received federal funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research solutions for children who struggle to understand speech in background noise.

Our most ambitious project: a decade of apps brought together in one web platform for schools, teletherapy and home practice, on any modern computer or tablet.

Our AAC app became free, with a grammar engine that helps users build complete, grammatical sentences.

We saw how technology could fill a gap in speech therapy before anyone else did, and we keep looking for the next new way to help children learn.
Every child learns differently. Our tools can be adjusted to each learner’s goals, level and pace, because one size never fits all.
Our tools are built with care and a deep understanding of special education. We don’t just meet the standard; we work to raise it.

Hundreds of adaptive activities, caseload management and reports in one web platform for clinicians, schools and families.

Smarty Ears Online is our web platform for speech, language, literacy and social communication. It brings hundreds of adaptive activities, progress data, caseload management and reports together in one place, so therapists, educators and families can work toward the same goals, in school and at home.
Keeping your device and browser up to date gives you the latest features.
Smarty Ears Online offers site licenses for schools and organizations, with volume discounts for larger teams. Request a demo and we will help you find the right plan.
Our iPad and iPhone apps are sold through Apple’s App Store, which offers volume purchasing for schools.
Activities can be matched to the goals in a child’s IEP, and progress data and reports make it easy to monitor growth and document it. Because therapists, teachers and families can use the same tools, the whole team stays on the same page, at school and at home.
