Over the last four years, Smarty Ears and Bilinguistics have worked on the first and only articulation app fully standardized on the iPad. The Bilingual Articulation and Phonology Assessment (BAPA) has been in the App Store since 2011 as a non-standardized, qualitative assessment of Spanish articulation and phonology. In 2012, BAPA was updated with a one-of-a-kind feature for a bilingual articulation assessment: the ability to evaluate both English and Spanish skills for each student. English-speaking SLPs could also use it to assess English-speaking students, so BAPA quickly became one of the most versatile options for evaluators, whatever the studentâs primary language.
In 2014, Smarty Ears updated BAPA to version 2.0 with standardization. This is a groundbreaking step for speech-language pathologists, who until now had to rely on bulky, outdated paper tests or on qualitative articulation and phonology assessments on the iPad.
âWe are very excited about the release of version 2.0 of BAPA. As a speech-language pathologist who did mostly evaluations with Spanish-speaking students all over the Dallas area, having an iPad app that gives me standard scores right after an evaluation, plus an automated report, is one of the most exciting contributions I have made to my profession.â
Barbara Fernandes, Smarty Ears CEO
English-speaking SLPs should know that âbilingualâ in the appâs name does not mean it is only for bilingual SLPs. It means it can assess two languages: English, Spanish or both.
Smarty Ears has been at the forefront of iPad-based assessments for speech-language pathologists, with evaluation tools for language, basic concepts, phonological awareness and, of course, articulation.
